How important is friendship in our lives...

Tonight while watching a movie with Tamara, we started to talk about friends and what friends mean to us. We decided to write a post about friendship and how important friendships are in our lives.

Before we can figure that out, we first need to figure out what exactly is a "Friend" ?

The word "friend" is actually harder to explain than I thought it would be. According to the dictionary, a friend is "a person who knows and likes another, a person who favours and supports a person who belongs to the same side or group". Well judging by that definition, everyone in the world must have hundreds of friends, if not more, right ? Wrong. There is way more to being a friend than just liking someone or supporting someone.

A friend is someone who knows all about you and likes you anyway. Being a friend means more than recognizing that no one is perfect, it means accepting it. A true friend is someone who knows that you won't always agree about everything, and doesn't hold it against you when you have a difference of opinion. Someone who isn't judgmental and is there to listen to you when you need it, no matter the subject. Someone you can trust with your life and your deepest, darkest secrets. Someone who will never let you down. Someone you can always rely on. A friend is someone who can keep you grounded and focused. Someone who can help you see through your obstacles. Someone to offer a shoulder to cry on when life gets rough. Someone to laugh and to cry with. Someone to lean on, through both the good and the bad. Someone you can be yourself around no matter how silly you want to be, and they won't make fun of you, they'll be laughing with you, and acting silly themselves. Someone you can sit silently beside, without conversation, but yet there is no boredom.
A friend is someone you choose wisely, because a friend is a reflection of yourself. Someone to compliment your own self, Someone who indicates who you are as a person.

Too many people get the meaning of a friend confused with that of an acquaintance. People are quick to call almost every person they share a conversation with a friend when that is not the case. For example, someone you work with is not exactly considered a friend, but yet, many people introduce their co-workers to other friends as friends. Many will say that it is because it is easier to just say friend, but it is really because not everyone knows the true meaning of friends.

An acquaintance is someone that you know enough to no longer consider them a stranger, but yet they are not close enough to you for you to call them a friend. That doesn't mean that acquaintances can not eventually become friends, but there is a fine line between the two because not every acquaintance will be special enough to call a friend.

And always have in mind that a friend is someone who knows the song in your heart and can sing it back to you when you have forgotten the words...
